Cockroaches are one of the most difficult household pests to get rid of. Their small size and nocturnal habits make them hard to spot. And once an infestation starts, it can spread rapidly. That’s why it is important to recognize the signs of a cockroach infestation and call your local pest control experts at the first sign of them.
How do you get rid of a cockroach infestation?
A common indicator is finding cockroach droppings. These are small, black specks that resemble ground coffee or pepper. The size of the feces is an indicator of the severity of the infestation. Also, female cockroaches produce oval-shaped egg casings, or oothecae, which can be found in cabinets and other hidden areas. The color of the oothecae varies by species. In general, the darker the oothecae, the more severe the infestation.
Other signs of a cockroach infestation are seeing cockroaches themselves or their feces. Look under large appliances like stoves and refrigerators; search cupboards and cabinets; check behind sinks, pipes and drains; and look around laundry rooms and basements for these nocturnal pests. They thrive in dark, cluttered areas that have warmth and moisture.
To prevent cockroaches, store pantry foods in air-tight containers; put away pet food and water bowls overnight when they are most active; and wipe down kitchen counters, sinks and stovetops daily. Also, don’t let compost, trash or recycling bins sit outside for long and remove accumulated trash from the home regularly. Also, caulk any gaps in walls and around baseboards to prevent cockroaches from entering the house.
