The Impact of Online Reviews on Football Video Game Sales

Sports games do not need to be good in order to sell, and critics are simply irrelevant to this market. This is because sports and gaming separately consume a large portion of pop culture, and where these separate obsessions converge in the form of sports-sim video games they create a very lucrative knot that can’t be untied.
We study the ratings and text of the reviews of a set of popular sports-sim video games, and find that whereas experts write more complex and detached reviews, amateurs tend to write more accessible and emotional ones. We also examine temporal patterns in amateur and expert rating behavior, examining the degree to which these reviewers agree with each other as well as how much they dis-agree with one another.

We observe that the helpfulness of amateur reviews declines as their rating deviation from the mean game rating increases (cf. Fig. 5a). When amateurs agree with the experts, their reviews are highly helpful. However, when they disagree, their reviews are moderately less helpful.
