A 4 gas meter is an essential tool to prevent risks associated with low oxygen atmospheres, toxic gases or vapors (like carbon monoxide or hydrogen sulfide) and explosive/combustible atmospheres. These portable devices are used in a variety of industries for safety, regulation compliance and situational awareness.

There are two types of sensors used in these instruments: electrochemical and catalytic. The electrochemical sensor triggers an internal chemical reaction when exposed to the target gas and generates a small electric signal that is measured by the meter and used to determine the concentration of the gas. The catalytic sensor uses a platinum-coated wire that oxidizes when exposed to the target gas and produces heat, which is detected by the meter and used to determine the gas concentration. The meter displays the results on its screen in real-time, along with an audible or visual alarm if the readings exceed the permissible limits.

When using a multi-gas monitor, be sure to document all calibration and bump test results in fresh air, use the correct test gas and read your manual. Also remember that oxygen sensors will drift over time due to atmospheric elements like temperature, air pressure and humidity, and corrosive gases may damage the sensor.

The worlds smallest 4 gas meter, the Ventis MX4, can comfortably clip within your breathing zone and simultaneously monitors LEL combustible gases, Oxygen (O2), Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen Sulfide. With a simple slide-on pump attachment, it is ideal for confined spaces or any application where a combustible and toxic gas is present.
