Born into a family of farmers, Carson left home at age 16 to pursue his dream of becoming a frontiersman. In the 1830s, he joined fur-trapping expeditions into the Rocky Mountains and later lived among and married into the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. During the American Civil War, he fought on the Union side at the Battle of Valverde and later led a regiment of Hispanic volunteers from New Mexico in suppression campaigns against the Navajo, Mescalero Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche.

Carson is featured as a main character in several Western films, including the 1940 film Kit Carson and the 1986 miniseries The Adventures of Kit Carson. In addition, he is the inspiration for a same-named character in the 1940s Tex Willer comic book series and an important supporting character in Michael Moorcock’s Whitefriars trilogy. He is also honored by a statue on Olvera Street in Los Angeles and by a monument of a bronze representation of a tree trunk with the words “Carson 1844” carved into it placed at Carson Pass in the Sierra Nevada.
